How an AI Coach Helps You Actually Understand Your Lab Results

By Vijay K · Founder, TestoTrack

You get your results back: Total testosterone, 512 ng/dL. Reference range 264–916. Now what? Is that good for your age? Should you retest? Does it explain the fatigue? The report doesn't say — and your fifteen-minute annual physical won't cover it either.

The interpretation gap

This is the quiet failure of consumer lab testing: access to data has exploded, while access to interpretation hasn't. Interpretation is not trivial either — clinical guidelines hold that low testosterone is diagnosed only in men with consistent symptoms and repeated low fasting morning measurements (Bhasin et al., J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2018), which is more nuance than a reference range on a PDF can carry. Men are left triangulating between Reddit threads, supplement marketing, and podcast bravado. The result is either paralysis or confidently wrong action.

Why a generic chatbot isn't the answer

General-purpose AI models will happily answer health questions — from memory, with no visibility into your data, and with a known tendency to state plausible-sounding things that aren't true. For health guidance, "plausible" is not a standard. Grounding is the standard.

How TestoTrack's coach works instead

TestoTrack uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). When you ask a question, the system first retrieves relevant passages from a curated library of endocrinology research and clinical guidelines, then combines them with your actual numbers, age, and trend, and only then composes an answer. Three properties follow:

  • Personal: "Your 512 ng/dL is mid-range for your age, and up 12% from your last test" — not a generic range recital.
  • Grounded: answers are constrained to retrieved evidence. When the evidence is thin, the coach says so.
  • Bounded: a safety layer keeps the coach in its lane — it educates and informs, and it explicitly does not diagnose, treat, or recommend medication. Clinical questions get routed where they belong: to your physician.
Design principle: an AI health coach earns trust by what it refuses to make up.

What this looks like day to day

Log a result, and the coach proactively contextualizes it against your trend. Ask "what's my highest-leverage change right now?" and it prioritizes based on what your data shows — sleep debt, training consistency, testing cadence. Preparing for a doctor visit? Ask for a summary of your history and the questions worth raising. Fifteen minutes with your physician goes a lot further when you walk in with a trend line.

The bigger picture

The goal isn't to replace medical care — it's to end the era of men holding a lab report they can't read. Data plus interpretation plus a plan: that's the whole product, and it's why the coach sits at the center of TestoTrack rather than bolted on the side.
